About Me
Dr. Albrecht is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Miami. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Illinois State University in 1972, followed by a Master of Science degree in 1974 and a Ph.D. in 1977 from the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at Colorado State University.
Dr. Albrecht’s research focused on cloud and precipitation physics, utilizing in situ measurements from research aircraft and specialized radar systems for the remote sensing of clouds. His work emphasized advancing the scientific understanding of interactions among clouds, aerosols, and precipitation processes.
He has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications. His landmark 1989 Science paper, Aerosol, Cloud Microphysics, and Fractional Cloudiness, has received more than 5,500 citations and fundamentally reshaped scientific understanding of aerosol–cloud–precipitation interactions and their role in cloud formation and structure. This work has had a lasting influence on cloud and climate research worldwide.
In recognition of his scientific contributions, Dr. Albrecht received the Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal in 2023, the highest honor bestowed by the American Meteorological Society.
Dr. Albrecht was actively involved in undergraduate and graduate education for nearly four decades and co-authored the textbook Atmospheric Thermodynamics (first published in 1998; second edition, 2023). In 2013, he received the American Meteorological Society’s Teaching Excellence Award for his outstanding contributions to education.
